Spotlight on Service, NWHFSC News, Partner Profile
Dear friends of NWHFSC,

The start of the new school year is upon us and family service needs are evolving. NW Hennepin Family Service Collaborative (NWHFSC) continues adapting to serve our nine communities. We have expanded to meet family needs. Please join us in welcoming two new staff members.
Sierra Howard looks forward to welcoming all Brooklyn Center residents at the Brooklyn Center Community Schools health resource center. The Collaborative launched a two-year pilot to fund this new position.
Newly hired Tena Johnshoy Barasa is highly organized and ready to assist in the NWHFSC management office. She is taking over for retiring administrative assistant Deb McEwen. After twelve years faithfully maintaining LCTS data, setting up coat drives and planning hundreds of partner meetings, Deb McEwen is retiring. We thank Deb for her years of service!

Spotlight on Service: Family School Coordinators and Health Resource Center
Family School Coordinator (FSC) program work is a regional design model in the six middle schools in the NWHFSC service delivery area. Family School Coordinators provide school-based mental health intervention services. The FSCs are based on a best practices model of prevention and early intervention developed by Wm. Dikel Ph.D. The Family School Coordinators initially were a part of a Pilot Project with the Hennepin County Leadership Action Group for Children’s Mental Health (LAG). These positions are fully funded by the Northwest Hennepin Family Service Collaborative in partnership with PrairieCare.

Family School Coordinators Duties:
  • Provide confidential, skills-based support to children and adolescents in a school-based setting
  • Work closely with teachers and other school staff to support and improve a student’s functioning in school
  • Offer family supports in the home, school, or office setting during day or evening hours
  • Assist families in navigating through the sometimes-confusing array of school and community services
  • Offer referrals to other resources in the community when needed
  • Team with the student, family members, and school staff to effectively address the mental health needs of the student
